Training visit at Münster

From October 27 to November 25, 2025, Joanna Bierła, MD, PhD, will be attending a training course at Medizinische Klinik B (Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Endocrinology, Clinical Infectious Diseases) at the University Hospital of Münster (Germany), headed by Prof. Jonel Trebicka, MD, PhD.

This is the next stage of research conducted as part of the European Joint Programme on Rare Diseases project “Multimolecular targeted study of copper overload in Wilson’s disease,” acronym WilsonMed, headed in Poland by Prof. Piotr Socha, MD, PhD.

As part of the work carried out so far at the CMHI, Joanna Bierła, MD, PhD (the main contractor of the project) introduced a technique for isolating cell lines from the urine of patients with Wilson’s disease. At the center in Münster, under the supervision of Dr. Vanessa Sandfort, further analyses are being conducted to examine the cell lines isolated from patients, and an attempt has been made to transform them into induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS).

It is assumed that future research will allow the creation of organoids – hepatocytes that could be used both in research into rare diseases such as Wilson’s disease and as modern laboratory tools for drug testing.
