Prof. Dr. Hans Zischka`s lecture “Rescuing mitochondria avoids liver failure in Wilson disease” at CMHI

We have a great pleasure to invite you to prof. dr Hans Zischka`s lecture “Rescuing mitochondria avoids liver failure in Wilson disease”, that will take place on October 8, 2019 at 13:30 at CMHI, in Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Department (training room of the Simulation Center, block D, first floor). Professor Zischka is an employee of the Institute of Molecular Toxicology and Pharmacology (HMGU) and Institute of Toxicology and Environmental Hygiene (Technical University Munich). As an outstanding specialist, he distinguished himself by conducting research on Wilson’s disease on both cell cultures isolated from patients and animal models. In his research, he described that hepatocytes respond to copper overload by intensifying mechanisms that support autophagy. This process affects copper overloaded mitochondria (in this case called mitophagia). However, mitophagia only helps to a certain level of copper overload and other treatments should be used to avoid cell death. Nevertheless, these results indicate the potential for cell regeneration resulting from auto- / mitophagy, which may be also relevant for other disorders that arise or are parallel to the accumulation of toxic metal cells. We encourage you to attend the seminar.
